I want to knit squares? Time to check for pods.

Lizard Ridge square #1

My first square for Lizard Ridge. My obsession with this blanket confuses me. I don't really like Kureyon, and I've never had any desire to knit a blanket before, but I saw this pattern and I must make it. This square was fun to knit and took about 4 hours. Now that I have the pattern memorized I'm sure it will go quicker. I have no idea what the colorway is, because Nancy gave me this random ball of Kureyon. Yesterday I ordered a couple balls from the clearance section of Webbs to add to this. I plan on picking up a ball once a month or so and in a year I'll have a blanket.

Here's the other thing I've been working on,

Grace Scarf

A super simple mistake rib scarf in Lousia Harding Grace (color 6). The yarn is really really nice, a 50/50 merino/silk blend that reminds me of Lorna's Laces Lion & Lamb, but in a DK weight. I grabbed 3 balls of this from the Bonita Knitting Store and am just over 1 ball in. I'll probably get about 5' of scarf after blocking. It also comes in a blue-grey shade that matches my eyes almost exactly, and I'm thinking of getting a couple balls to make a matching mistake rib hat. The softness and the sheen of this yarn is just wonderful and it feels great to knit with.

Other than these two projects, I've done a bit of work on a couple baby sweaters. Nothing photograph worthy yet, unfortunately. I also had someone at a yarn store try and talk me out of Dale Baby Ull for a baby sweater because it was "too thin. It'll take forever." It wound up being a long and involved conversation about how yes, I did want to knit a baby sweater on fingering weight yarn, and yes, I did really have a pattern that called for it, and no, it's not actually going to take that long. *sigh*

Comments

Ugh - what an unhelpful yarn store employee. You'd think she'd be happy to actually have someone who wanted to do something besides a fun fur scarf.

Your mistake rib scarf is my favorite color - pink never hurts to liven up anything. :)

I think it's 93, the Kureyon -- I have a purse in that colour. I luffs it, even though I need to felt the purse a bit more. I quit using it a couple years ago in favour of a bag with pockets. /gabyaw Anyhow, if you want I'll dig around for the colourway; I bought it online and never throw away e-receipts.

That employee is an idiot. Differnt strokes for different folks. I avoid situations like this by firmly waving off employees who hover around asking if I need assistance. No, thank you, I'll come to you if I need help, and yes, I've done my homework before going to the shop. If they keeep bothering me after that, then I'm much less likely to visit the store ever again.

I felt that gut reaction for Lizard Ridge when I first saw it--want it, want to knit it--even though I'm not a squares person. Nice start. Next year you'll have a really nice blankie!

Ha, some people maybe have a hard time believing not everyone is like them. Or I wonder if they were stereotyping you b/c of your age and have just become so used to "I want something really fast" knitters. Are you going to the Whistlestop sunday?

Also I think I hav two balls of the kureyon, I don't know if the colors will coordinate, but you can have 'em if you want 'em. (the bright turquoise purple green)

that's a great idea, to knit up a square, bit by bit, when you come across some kureyon! that way, it doesn't feel as much like a kick in the pocketbook! i did not realize that pattern has you knit squares and then put together ( i haven't read the instructions) ... but, i think that makes it a great portable project too, and gives you the versatility to play with placement and color :)
by the way, you win the prize for being the first person (i've seen) to start this endeavor!
gosh, i think i have a random ball in stash somewhere too, that was gifted to me. yeah!!!

Goodness, if a baby sweater in fingering weight takes too long, what's fingering weight FOR? Decorating Christmas trees?

Everyone's got it bad for Lizard Ridge. It's all over the 'nets. I swore I wouldn't start it until I found some Kureyon on sale, so thanks for the tip! I'll be joining yet another KAL now. Have you joined the Leapin' Lizards KAL yet?

I wish I had some soothing words for your experience at the yarn store. Having assumptions made about one is always hurtful, insulting, and demeaning. I never know whether to talk my way through these situations as you did, or just leave.
