Socks for mom.

Opal ribbed socks with afterthought heels.

Mom socks.

I knit these for my mom. When I started them last spring they were going to be for her birthday, but that didn't happen. I just found out she's having foot surgery the first week of November and will need to be off her feet for 6 weeks. Sound like a time for hand knit socks, at least once whatever bandages come off.

The heel is an afterthought heel.

Waste yarn knit in where heel will go. I like to knit two rows with the waste yarn so I can cut it out instead of picking it out. This picture was taken April 9th, and I hadn't touched them again until yesterday.

Putting the heel stitches on the needles

Getting the stitches back on the needle, the most annoying part of this heel. I knit the heel over 60% of the socks because my mom's feet are a bit wider than mine.

Rarr!

Stitches distributed and ready to knit. The afterthought heel is basically knit like a toe. Decrease 4 stitches every other row for a while, then every row the last few times around.

I like this heel with self patterning yarn because it doesn't break up the pattern like other types of heels do. I'm also pleased with my ability to make them pretty much match. I hope she likes them.
